The recommend procedure for good sharpening without getting halos, fringes errors and artifacts is changing the image into Lab mode and only sharpening the Luminosity channel.
Here is an easier way to do the same thing:
Choose Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask, apply the settings that you want, then choose Edit>Fade Unsharp Mask, and alter the Blend Mode to Luminosity.
You can also reduce the amount of the sharpening at the same time if you feel that you've applied too much.
